Our Trip To John Taylor Gatto’s Home [BONUS]

This Tuesday  I was fortunate enough to be part of a group that went to Manhattan and saved the late John Taylor Gatto's entire collection of books and personal papers from being taken  to a dump. John's apartment - where he had lived since the 1970s - is changing ownership at the end of the month. On Wednesday we shared the experience with Autonomy and Un-iversity participants. With stories from Rich, Lisa, Adam, and myself. And as a bonus, a portion of our conversation (about Gatto's impact and mission as a teacher) gets sent live into a public school Zoom classroom. There will be more productions on this. We still need to go through all the books. School Sucks Project ...

[BONUS] In Pursuit of Utopia (Episode 7) – “New Harmony”

(AUDIO, 135 minutes) with Danny McCarthy and Kevin Cole. The New Harmony  story includes interesting and largely unknown roots of both American compulsory  schooling and socialism.  In the Richard Grove/John Gatto clip that opens the show, you'll notice some nice tie-ins to our previous podcasts this week . Outline: How does Robert Owen's system (called by Marx and Engels "utopian socialism") compare to Marx and Engel's system (called by them "scientific socialism")? How are they similar? Was Owenite socialism consistent with the ideals of the Enlightenment? In other words, is it fair to say that socialism is just as much a product of Enlightenment rationalism as is American republicanism? Just as the religious utopias are reminiscent of the Puritan colonies, ...

With Every Turn of the Screw… (with Pete Quinones) [SUPPLEMENTAL #642]

Today's show is a followup to the previous conversation with Dave Smith - a deeper level of exploration of the history of school, covering a longer period of time, and showing the progression of control over the public mind. (Edited Audio from Brett on Free Man Beyond the Wall) Pete's question: what you believe is the biggest conspiracy behind turning the schools into the indoctrination centers they are today? It's hard to pick just one. A STORY OF INCREASING LEVERAGE OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGERS (AND BOILED FROGS) 1840s-1930s - Mandatory public education in America began as part of a quest for a perfect society with the Puritans in Massachusetts who were seeking a religious utopia - Prussian system replaces the predictability ...

Thank You, John Taylor Gatto [PODCAST #584]

john taylor gatto

In Remembrance 1935-2018 A monologue about the courageous life and work of John Taylor Gatto, and the story of how he changed my life. How many teachers reluctantly acknowledge the failure of mass compulsory schooling? How many become disheartened but then relegate themselves to quiet conformity? How many hunt for the villains, but simply wind up sniveling behind the closed doors of the teachers’ lounge, choosing to blame children and parents? If you've worked in or around the public schools - or even if you simply endured the requisite 15,000 hours as a student - you're likely able to form some rough estimations for these questions. Yet how powerful is the voice of the teacher with the conviction to take ...

237: If You Send Your Kid to Private School…You’re A Bad Person???

From the After School Sucks Special (8-29-13) Tony Myers and I discuss the Slate article, If You Send Your Kid to Private School, You Are a Bad Person (A manifesto), by Allison Benedikt It Begins... "You are a bad person if you send your children to private school. Not bad like murderer bad—but bad like ruining-one-of-our-nation’s-most-essential-institutions-in-order-to-get-what’s-best-for-your-kid bad. So, pretty bad. I am not an education policy wonk: I’m just judgmental. But it seems to me that if every single parent sent every single child to public school, public schools would improve. This would not happen immediately. It could take generations. Your children and grandchildren might get mediocre educations in the meantime, but it will be worth it, for the eventual ...
