Jim Cunigan – Hubris + Public Policy, From Psychiatry to Eugenics [PODCAST #617]

Play

Jim is a clinical psychiatrist, a libertarian, and a School Sucks listener. At the Midwest Peace and Liberty Fest he gave a presentation called When Scientific Experts Determine Public Policy... What Could Go Wrong? It focused on the implementation of eugenic policies during the Progressive Era, which featured many of the same scientific engineers who shaped the 20th century schooling system.

Jim described the motivation behind the presentation: "part of it is that I do have some morbid fascination with some darker elements of history, especially when they overlap with medicine in some way. Also, while I didn’t emphasize this point, because I was preaching to the choir, I like highlighting examples of when government action resulted in something monstrous. I’ve seen people sincerely argue that capitalism created chattel slavery and the government ended it. It was a law! Eugenic sterilization was starting to be of less interest in some circles, until it got SCOTUS approval, and then it exploded. Most people in our circles understand a clear distinction between legality and morality, but it seems that for many people these ideas overlap a great deal."

We'll discuss that history along with an exploration of the psychiatric field from the inside out.

Recorded on Sunday June 23rd at the Midwest Peace and Liberty Fest.
