[BONUS] The Discomfort Zone (s04e01) – Imposterpreneurship

Andrew is in the hot seat this time and we're talking about imposter syndrome. What is it? Why does Andrew have it? How do we cure it? We'll also discuss how knowing your core values aids in decision making. And then you'll enjoy a spot-on dream analysis. Nothing crazy, just the standard after a protest is held in his back yard, man takes a car with a Styrofoam interior to find the police but encounters a bear and fights the bear and then wants to take it to a vet so he gives it sedatives that turn it into a kitten and he eventually brings it home where it turns back into a bear and is now his pet dream ...

“Plan B” With Zak Slayback [PODCAST #696]

Favorite School Sucks neighbor Zak Slayback returns to offer some key 2021 updates to his past advice for young people at the beginning of their careers. Our previous conversation on this topic, called How High School Students Can Get Ahead In Their Careers [PODCAST #583], covered: - Why young people need to start personal websites while in high school, and how this website can work as a portfolio, showcase of personality, a canvas and as insurance - How to contact an existing expert in the area you want to go into, getting a better idea of how to get started - Methods of signaling and building a portfolio - growing your network of people who are a few steps ahead ...

The Mask Is Off [UN-IVERSITY]

We had a large turnout with much more optimism than you might expect. A discussion of the last week and some theorizing about what will play out over the next 10 days and beyond. Topics: We open with a discussion of digital self-defense, looking at founders vs. inheritors in the big data and tech world. Can a creativity asymmetry balance the power asymmetry? Does historical precedent still have a use as systems of control are perfected and made more invisible? Be careful of narrative fallacy. Was the January 6th siege at the Capitol the new Charlottesville? We debate. New Habit Installation, With Jacki Dalsimer [PODCAST #694]

Jacki Dalsimer is well-respected Health Coach and a personal friend of mine. For years we have enjoyed nerding out on different exercise topics, with the expectation she'd eventually visit the show to share some of her wisdom with you. So we decided that January was the ideal time for a conversation about goal-setting and new habit-installation, mostly in a fitness and diet context, but certainly applicable beyond. The Discomfort Zone (s20e20) Honestly, Here’s What Happened [BONUS]

Relationships often strain and break because of what isn't being said, or because of what we don't even know how to say. So here we try to say it all. In late April 2020, we got into a very heated argument on Portmansheau podcast, seemingly over what would or wouldn't happen for the rest of the year with C0VlD and its fallout, and then we didn't speak for almost seven months. We argued on this show all the time, for fun and comedy, but this time was clearly different. Neither one of us understood exactly why until recently, and it turned out to be far more complex (and uncomfortable) than we thought. Recorded while driving around dawn on I-75 south ...

In My Awareness [PODCAST #692]

(Exploring Integral Theory, Conclusion, With Wes Bertrand) Today Wes and I will discuss self-integration, and one of the most difficult polarities human beings have to reconcile, but sooner or later we all must do it. Also: - Dan Siegel's and Ken Wilber's insights on the power and practice of awareness - Manolis Kellis: Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything | Lex Fridman Podcast #142 - Human mind and the abstraction layers of reality - our burden of awareness of the whole stack of layers - becoming self aware - being bigger than pain - and much, much more Integral theory is largely focused on consciousness studies, psychology, research supported spirituality, and social sciences. 2020, The Year In Review – With Scott Hambrick [PODCAST #691]

Scott Hambrick returns to infuriate probably about half the audience. I wanted Scott's "clear pill" take on our recent "black pill" discussion (in what was supposed to be an Un-iversity-only chat), but we quickly expanded beyond pill heuristics to a reflection on the year and the state of the world. We disagree in several places, as I try to insert optimism where I can, but I also acknowledge that the optimism needs to be focused in the right places. This leads to some examination and autopsy on the so-called liberty movement, politics, and past outreach attempts. We'll also get a running start with a whole history of the pills. * The red pill vs. the blue, a la The Matrix ...

Our Trip To John Taylor Gatto’s Home [BONUS]

This Tuesday  I was fortunate enough to be part of a group that went to Manhattan and saved the late John Taylor Gatto's entire collection of books and personal papers from being taken  to a dump. John's apartment - where he had lived since the 1970s - is changing ownership at the end of the month. On Wednesday we shared the experience with Autonomy and Un-iversity participants. With stories from Rich, Lisa, Adam, and myself. And as a bonus, a portion of our conversation (about Gatto's impact and mission as a teacher) gets sent live into a public school Zoom classroom. There will be more productions on this. We still need to go through all the books. School Sucks Project ...

The Black Pill? [PODCAST #690]

Wherein I attend a secret gathering and I am offered some pills. This is an important discussion about a new and rapidly spreading philosophy of hopelessness. It's something I feel needs to be acknowledged and integrated into our larger conversation. Is it actually the most realistic outlook available? And where most people might just see nihilism and despair, is there possibility for new or renewed personal empowerment? Can You Teach Personal Development Inside A Public High School? [PODCAST #688]

...a public high school teacher asks. I have never posted one of these UN-IVERSITY discussion groups as a podcast, but this one felt a lot like a podcast, and I think it's an important discussion that ties much of our recent content together with some of my own personal explorations of late. [UN-IVERSITY] Opening the Kept Gates

Richard Grove and I use the work of investigative journalist Matt Taibbi as a jumping off point to discuss how gatekeepers can be useful to help "on ramp" people stuck on the low roads of mainstream confirmation-bias media to ride on a better super highway of information, if you will. Furthermore, are we building (or can we build) a map that helps to open some of their gates. This exploration was inspired by our recent integral theory series. Where else can we discover ways to integrate disparate or even conflicting sources of information into a clearer picture of reality?
