100: Brett Sucks Podcast (Outtakes, Discarded Rants, and Failures From the First 100 Episodes)

WARNING: Explicit Content While the title is self-explanatory, this is a somewhat symbolic show. Most of this material was originally discarded because I found it to be too negative. At this point, I'd like to turn another corner, and start producing a generally more positive and constructive product. In the first 100 shows, with regard to criticism of the state and its schools, few stones were left unturned. We've covered these problems in great detail, often with a very negative tone. This show represents a purging of that negativity, a purging of the spotlight on problems, and a transition to a greater focus on the important work that still lies ahead: to redefine "education." Thanks for listening.

071 (Supplemental): Wes, Daniel and I Discuss Domination Systems and Non-Violent Communication

(Complete Liberty Podcast Episode 127 Repost) The tribe I have had some contact with is Orang Asilie tribe in Malaysia. I'll never forget what my translator was saying before we got started. He was going over how he was going to translate. He pointed out his language has no verb to be, like [you are] good, bad, wrong, right. You can't classified people if you take away the verb to be. How are you going to insult people? You take away ninety percent of my vocabulary! So I say what are you going to say if I say "You're selfish"? "Its going to be hard, I'd translate it like this: Marshall says he sees you are taking care of your ...

038: UConn-athon! (Students For Liberty Discussion Part 2)

On Wednesday April 14th, I was invited to speak to the UConn Students For Liberty at the University of Connecticut. I had prepared a thirty-minute speech, and planned to devote another 30 minutes to Q&A. However, the audience included several socialists, and the entire event wound up running three hours. I gave some of the speech. Even though the outcome was different from what I anticipated, and I didn't counter their objections as well as I would've liked, I thought the whole experience was great. I have split it into two parts. This part includes a bit of political discussion. I also talk in depth about my difficulties in trying to figure out my role as a tutor, and dealing ...

030 (Supplemental): Ian Freeman and I Discuss Action As Education

Some additional content from my discussion with Ian Freeman of Free Talk Live, edited out of Episode 15. We cover the Free State Project, Keene, activism for liberty, and the return-on-investment of political action and civil disobedience. Most importantly, we discuss the combination of action and an educational message. NOTE: The first minute of the discussion overlaps one minute of Episode 15 for context. NOTE: I call this recent tea party movement "stupid" because I feel it completely misses the point and I'm pretty sure it will simply vanish after Obama leaves office. NOTE: Not a blanket endorsement of civil disobedience. For more info, please check out the earlier Supplemental with Wes, Daniel and I. Or the Freedomain Roundtable on ...

023 (Supplemental): Collective Education, A Listener Email

ABOVE: As you can see, private education is...not necessarily the answer. An issue that I've been meaning to cover for a while: The real difference between private and public schools, or pedagogical lack thereof. After reflecting on more recent business-related trips to schools, I want to make sure I'm not oversimplifying. A listener named Sebastian sent me one of his posts from the Freedomain Radio Boards, which was a big help. Psychologist Carl Rogers' quotation about instructional approach: "To free curiosity; to permit individuals to go charging off in new directions dictated by their own interests; to unleash the sense of inquiry; to open everything to questioning and exploration; to recognize that everything is in process of change—here is an ...
